DEAR YOUNG COACH ASSAIANTE, IT’S ABOUT LIFE AND LEARNING, NOT WINNING AND LOSING

“On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields will bear the fruits of victory.” – General Douglas MacArthur

Understand that the measure of a man is resilience; that's where you show your mettle. That's the measure of a man. You will learn incredibly critical life skills in sport that will make you successful later in life. You're gonna fail, and you're going to make some mistakes. It's okay. Learn from them and keep it all in perspective, because all learning comes from losing. Don't be afraid of losing, because that's when you're going to get to do your best job and teach your most important lessons... after they lose.

Be consistent. Be authentic. The single most important quality in a coach empathy. You need to put yourself on the other side of the table and understand where this person is coming from to truly help them. In terms of winning and losing, none of it matters. It isn't about us, it's about them.
